Orthodontics for Children

Welcome to Biggs-Hansen Orthodontics in Indianapolis, IN, your family orthodontist!

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get a check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is necessary, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaws and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Therapy

Our doctors provide diagnosis and treatment for patients who may have developed a temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and can assist in treatment of complex dysfunctions with conservative therapy. A TMJ consultation would be necessary, and the doctors would inform you regarding whether you are a candidate for conservative therapy that we offer in our practice.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Appliance Therapy

Our doctors have extensive background in the relationship between anatomical issues that contribute to both orthodontic and sleep apnea issues. We will coordinate efforts with pediatricians, sleep specialists, and sleep centers to discuss whether an appliance could facilitate and improve the patient’s orthodontic and/or obstructive sleep apnea disorder. A consultation with one of our doctors to discuss the possibilities and obtain proper diagnostic information would be necessary to determine if your child would be a candidate for an appliance to assist with their orthodontic issue and obstructive sleep apnea disorder.
